6 Organic Pregnancy Pillow Options
Is it easy for you to fall asleep or do you toss and turn trying to find a comfortable position? I’ve always envied people who can fall asleep even before their head touches the pillow. Although it’s much easier for me to fall asleep nowadays, I still have nights when my body just can’t seem to adjust. Imagine what it’s like for pregnant women! During the latter stages of pregnancy, it’s challenging for a woman to support her expanded belly while lying in bed, which affects her ability to sleep and rest. Ironically, this occurs at a time when the doctor prescribes increased sleep and rest for the benefit of both the mother and the baby. The good news is that there is a solution that can help with that!
Using a body pillow can help ease the discomfort and relieve the pressure from the growing baby bump. It also helps with hip alignment and can work for anyone who prefers side sleeping to sleeping on their back. At the same time, it is important to choose a safe body pillow, so you don’t inhale any potentially toxic fumes from the pillow as you sleep. Therefore, in this post, I am sharing a roundup of options for the best organic body/pregnancy pillows for you to consider. Read on to find out which body pillow I believe is the safest and the most comfortable!
6 Organic Pregnancy Pillow Options
To start with, when I was pregnant, my belly was extremely big – I would even say huge, especially in contrast with my slim physique. At that time (2012), I was new to the world of non-toxic living, and maternity pillows were not yet on my radar. I started product ingredient research with baby products, such as baby shampoos, as I was more concerned with the safety of my baby than my own. (If interested, you can read about my health update here.)
When someone handed down their pregnancy pillow to me, I was happy and grateful. I didn’t know pillows could be toxic. Now that I look back, I realize that the body pillow I used was probably toxic due to the materials it was made from. But it did help me feel less uncomfortable when I lay in bed.
Today, my goal is to help you find a maternity pillow that combines both comfort and safety. However, it’s not easy to find a non-toxic pillow because there are not that many options for body pillows on the market, in the first place. The good news is that I am here to assist you in finding the right pregnancy pillow for yourself or your loved ones (as it is a really great gift!).
As a result of my research, I have come up with three categories of body pillows for expectant mothers:
- “not a fan”
- “better,” and
- “best.”
“Not A Fan” Maternity Pillows
To begin with, a body pillow largely consists of two components – fill and shell. The main criterion for the maternity pillows in the “not a fan” category is their fill, which is made of memory foam, aka polyurethane foam. It is a petroleum-based material that may contain potentially harmful petroleum contaminants.
Category | Pregnancy Pillow Brand | Reason for the category placement |
Not A Fan | Brentwood Home Crystal Cove Charcoal Body Pillow | Fill: 65% memory foam, 35% polyester gel fiber Shell: polyester |
Not A Fan | COOP Sleep Goods Original Maternity Adjustable Pillow | Fill: memory foam, microfiber Shell: polyester Pillowcase: 60% polyester, 40% bamboo-derived viscose rayon |
Not A Fan | Tempur-Pedic Body Pillow | Fill: memory foam called TEMPUR-Material™️ (learn more about this material in my Tempur-Pedic Mattress Review) Shell: polyester |
“Better” Pillows For Moms-To-Be
The main criterion for the expectant mother pillows in the “better” category is the filling made of polyester. While polyester is also a petroleum-derived material, it is safer than polyurethane foam.
Category | Pregnancy Pillow Brand | Reason for the category placement |
Better | Bean Products Hypo-Allergenic Sleeping Bean | Fill: polyfill fiber from recycled soda bottles Shell: cotton |
Better | Cozy Earth Bamboo Down Alternative Body Pillow | Fill: 60% polyester, 40% bamboo viscose Shell: bamboo viscose |
Better | Tuft & Needle Body Pillow | Fill: polyester Shell: cotton |
“Best” Pregnancy Pillow Options
It is a good idea to go for an organic pregnancy pillow. In my opinion, the safest body pillow is GOTS certified organic as an entire pillow, not just its cover. In my blog post Are Organic Mattresses Worth It? I explain why GOTS certification matters so much.
In short, the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) sets high safety standards for materials. For instance, GOTS doesn’t allow toxic chemical flame retardants, memory/polyurethane foam, soybean foam, synthetic latex, toxic adhesives, and some other materials in textile products. They also inspect and certify the manufacturing facility and assure that the entire production process (from sourcing to distribution) adheres to GOTS standards.
Although not every option below is GOTS-certified organic as an entire pillow, they are here, so you have some choices:
- Naturepedic Body Pillow (IREAD15 for 15% off)
- Holy Lamb Organics All-Natural Body Pillow
- Holy Lamb Organics Organic Body Pillow
- Bean Products Original Sleeping Bean Body Pillow
- The Futon Shop Organic Body Pillow
- Coyuchi Organic Latex Body Pillow
Naturepedic Body Pillow
- Fill: GOTS-approved PLA
- Shell: GOTS-certified 100% organic cotton sateen
- GOTS-certified as an entire pillow: yes (find their certificate in the GOTS supplier database)
- Size: 24”x54”
- Price: $179
- Price with a 300TC sateen pillowcase: $219
- Where to buy: Naturepedic website (use the IREAD15 code for 15% off)
First, the Naturepedic full body pillow has no polyurethane foam, memory foam, flame retardants etc. Its encasement is made of certified organic cotton sateen fabric that has a luxurious soft feel. The filling is made from non-GMO sugarcane PLA fiber, a high-performance petroleum-free fiber that wicks moisture while offering a comfortable fluffiness. GOTS approves the use of PLA.
Second, the pillow provides support across your entire body as you sleep and can well serve as a pregnancy pillow. It relieves pressure from your arms, knees, and spine as well as helps with your hip alignment.
In my opinion, Naturepedic products, including mattresses, bedding, and pillows – all made in the US – are the safest and most comfortable. I have been a fan of this company for many years now due to its integrity and commitment to safe manufacturing practices. In my Naturepedic Pillow Review, I explain why I trust this company and its founder. I also give an overview of other Naturepedic non-toxic pillow models. Personally, I have been sleeping on their adjustable pillow for many years now and am satisfied with both the high quality and the comfort.
Holy Lamb Organics All-Natural Body Pillow
- Fill: premium eco wool (3.49 lbs)
- Shell: organic cotton sateen
- GOTS certified as an entire pillow: no
- Size: 17”x53”
- Price: $189
- Price with organic cotton sateen pillowcase: $265
- Where to buy: Holy Lamb Organics website
This pillow is a good option for those who are not allergic to wool. It’s more expensive than the Naturepedic body pillow (IREAD15), though, smaller in size, and is not GOTS-certified organic. Also, keep in mind that wool can flatten out with time. You can learn more about the wool Holy Lamb uses in my blog post about The Best Organic Nursing Pillow.
Holy Lamb Organics Organic Body Pillow
- Fill: GOTS-certified organic wool (3.49 lbs)
- Shell: GOTS-certified 100% organic cotton sateen
- GOTS certified as an entire pillow: yes (find their certificate in the GOTS supplier database)
- Size: 17”x53”
- Price: $230
- Price with organic cotton sateen pillowcase: $305
- Where to buy: Holy Lamb Organics website
Although this pregnancy pillow is GOTS-certified organic, its price is considerably higher than that for the Naturepedic pillow ($179 – and $219 with a pillowcase – minus 15% with the IREAD15 code). If you are into wool, it’s a great option for you. Also, check out the Holy Lamb Organics Nursing Pillow.
Bean Products Organic Veggie Sleeping Bean Pillow
- Fill: organic kapok (silk-like tree seed fiber)
- Shell: organic cotton
- GOTS certified as an entire pillow: no (at least, I didn’t find them in the GOTS supplier database)
- Size: 5.5 ft
- Price: $139.95
- Where to buy: Bean Products website
Please note that Bean Products have two other kinds of body pillows filled with polyfill fiber. This category (the “best”), however, does not include pillows with polyfill fiber. So, if you go for this body pillow, be sure to check the right box on their website, namely “organic veggie sleeping bean.”
Also, take into consideration the manufacturer’s care instructions: “In order to wash the body pillow, simply take the filling out, wash the cover, and replace the filling. If it is filled with kapok, be sure to remove the filling outdoors as kapok is very light and fluffy and will cause a mess indoors.”
The Futon Shop Organic Body Pillow
- Fill: GOTS-certified organic cotton
- Shell: GOTS-certified 100% organic cotton sateen
- GOTS certified as an entire pillow: no (at least, I didn’t find them in the GOTS supplier database)
- Size: 17”x53”
- Price: $99.98
- Where to buy: The Futon Shop
Although on the website they say their pillows are made with GOTS-certified organic materials, the certificate they offer as proof is not a GOTS certificate. Rather, it is transaction certificate that only states that in 2021, certain materials were transported from point A to point B. In other words, there is no guarantee that the product you purchase is made from the materials indicated on the transaction certificate. For this reason, my first and foremost choice is Naturepedic (IREAD15) because I trust their integrity and commitment to human health and sustainable environmental practices.
You can learn more about some other certificates that do not prove that the product is “organic” in my blog post Two Keys To Buying An Affordable Non-Toxic Mattress.
Coyuchi Organic Latex Body Pillow
- Fill: GOLS-certified organic latex
- Shell: GOTS-certified organic cotton sateen
- GOTS certified as an entire pillow: yes (find their certificate in the GOTS supplier database)
- Size: 7.5”x68”
- Price: $248
- Where to buy: Coyuchi website
Keep in mind that this maternity pillow is not suitable for women with latex allergies. (You can learn more about that in my post #1 Latex-Free Organic Mattress.) And it is more expensive than the Naturepedic pillow ($179 and $219 with a pillowcase minus 15% with the IREAD15 code).
Summary: Organic Pregnancy Pillow Options
Choosing A GOTS-Certified Organic Pregnancy Pillow Made With Organic Ingredients Will Protect You From Inhaling Any Potentially Toxic Fumes That May Emit From Conventional Materials.
In sum, using a body pillow during pregnancy can help ease the discomfort and relieve pressure from your growing belly. Additionally, it can help anyone who prefers side sleeping because it is good for hip alignment and knee pressure relief.
It is important to choose not only a comfortable but also a safe pillow. That is why I consider GOTS-certified organic maternity pillows to be the “best” and the safest. My favorite one is GOTS-certified organic Naturepedic Body Pillow (IREAD15 for 15% off).
The “not a fan” category features body pillows made with polyurethane foam (aka memory foam). And the “better” category features pregnancy pillows made with a polyester fill. In my opinion, some of the “best” pregnancy pillows are as follows:
- Naturepedic Body Pillow (IREAD15 for 15% off)
- Holy Lamb Organics All-Natural Body Pillow*
- Holy Lamb Organics Organic Body Pillow*
- Bean Products Original Sleeping Bean Body Pillow
- The Futon Shop Organic Body Pillow
- Coyuchi Organic Latex Body Pillow*
