- In a six-month clinical trial of nearly 150 adolescents wearing braces, a fluoride-free toothpaste containing microcrystalline hydroxyapatite was just as effective as a fluoride toothpaste at preventing early cavities. The two groups also had similar levels of plaque and gum health, suggesting that hydroxyapatite is a promising alternative to fluoride for cavity prevention.
