Here’s The Problem…
But that’s not even the worst part!
Sadly, there is little protection for consumers by the US government.
US cosmetics rules got stronger in 2022, when Congress passed the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act (MoCRA). Today, companies must keep records showing their products are safe and report serious reactions to the FDA. The FDA can also order a recall if a product could cause serious harm and the company will not recall it on its own.
Here’s what did not change. The FDA still does not approve cosmetics before they go on store shelves (color additives are the exception). And each company decides for itself how to show its product is safe.
So reading the label is still up to you. That’s where I come in.
Every rating in the Label Verdict comes from my own ingredient review. Before I rate an ingredient, I check these sources, including how much of it gets into your bloodstream. Then I form my own opinion.
- EU Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) opinions and mandates
- CosIng and its annexes
- EUR-Lex, ECHA CHEM, ECHA’s registry of classification proposals
- Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR)
- U.S. EPA IRIS
- Peer-reviewed studies on PubMed – often 10 to 20 or more per ingredient
- ECHA’s registry of restriction proposals
- ECHA’s endocrine disruptor list, the Commission’s cosmetics endocrine disruptor page
- Have Your Say, the European Commission’s public consultation portal
- ePing, the WTO notification system
- Comitology Register
- EU food additive approvals (E-numbers) and JECFA, the FAO and WHO expert committee on food additives
- Health Canada Hotlist
- CEPA Schedule 1
- California Proposition 65
- IARC, part of the World Health Organization
- FDA’s restricted cosmetic ingredients list, eCFR
- U.S. National Toxicology Program Report on Carcinogens
- IFRA Standards. IFRA Transparency List
- American Contact Dermatitis Society (ACDS) Core Allergen Series. ACDS Allergen of the Year
- PubChem, COSMOS-standard and NATRUE

It’s coming soon! Join the waitlist, and I’ll write you when it opens!
Hi, I’m Irina.
I’ve been studying personal care and cosmetic ingredients since 2012 when I was expecting my son. What started as a hobby became my full-time work: reading ingredient lists, reviewing products, and helping people make purchasing decisions without overwhelm.
Over the years, readers, product manufacturers, and retailers have asked me for my advice on ingredient choices.
Label Verdict brings that work into a faster tool.
It’s not a generic rating app. It’s based on my published ingredient ratings and the same label-reading process I use when I review products.
My goal is simple: to help you make a clear decision before you buy without having to spend hours on researching every ingredient yourself.
